How Surrey assesses Year 1

  • Year 1 has four strands: Medical Knowledge, Clinical Practice, Professional Development and Special Study Units (where you explore a topic of your choice in more depth). Every block above is examined in the Medical Knowledge Test. Professional Development is assessed by observed professionalism and attendance, so it has no articles here.
  • A formative mid-point paper (a practice test, not the pass or fail exam) has 50 single best answer questions (pick the one best option from a list). Team-based learning quizzes (individual readiness assurance tests, short quizzes done alone at the start of a team session) also run. Integrated clinical anatomy spot tests (short anatomy tests, one at the mid-point and one at the end of the year) run too.
  • Clinical Practice is assessed by a sequential OSCE. This is a two-part exam: every student sits a first screening test, and only students who do not meet its standard sit a second test. There is also a formative mid-point OSCE. The Special Study Unit is assessed by an oral presentation.
  • Surrey publishes the official assessment formats in its online module catalogue. For dates, always check your own timetable and course materials.

Getting ready for clinical

Year 2 is Clinical Pathways 1, when teaching and learning move towards the clinical environment. After that you continue in the clinical years, with placements in hospitals and general practice.
