How Sheffield assesses Phase 1 and Phase 2
- Phase 1 ends with two equally weighted exams covering the whole year: a 100-question single best answer (SBA) paper and a 12-question short answer (SAQ) paper, ordered as taught, starting with IMMS.
- Graded coursework runs alongside the exams: a History of Medicine essay, a Critical Appraisal presentation, a Communicating Health Information poster and a Community Attachment Scheme report.
- Phase 2a continues the written SBA and SAQ pattern for the system blocks, and Phase 2b ends in an OSCE of history, examination and communication stations. Mastery assessments in clinical skills are also part of the programme.
- Sheffield publishes the official dates and formats. Always check your own course materials.

Getting ready for clinical
Phases 3a and 3b (Years 3 and 4) are clinical placements, and Phase 4 is the final year. Sheffield is planning a new curriculum, aiming to start teaching it in Year 3 from September 2028. If you started in 2026 or later, your later years may be organised in academic years instead of phases, so check with Sheffield.
This is an independent revision guide written by SimpleMed. It is not endorsed by, or affiliated with, Sheffield Medical School or the University of Sheffield. Phase 1 names follow the Phase 1 syllabus. Phase 2 units follow student-compiled study guide headings, and the grouping and article mapping are ours. Always check your official course materials. Last updated October 2026.
