How North Wales assesses Phase 1

  • Assessment is non-modular (subjects are not examined separately), so one question can cover several subjects. You are also assessed through reflective writing, essays and logs of the clinical skills you have completed.
  • In Years 2 and 3 you sit progress tests (written exams that check how your knowledge is building up) three times a year.
  • The school publishes no unit list or Year 1 exam name. "Year 1 exams" is our label.
  • North Wales Medical School publishes the official dates and formats. Always check your own course materials.

Getting ready for clinical

Clinical learning starts early, with patient contact and placements from Year 1. In Year 3 you spend the full year embedded in a local community and GP practice (a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship, or LIC), following patients through primary and secondary care.

This is an independent revision guide written by SimpleMed. It is not endorsed by, or affiliated with, North Wales Medical School or Bangor University. The school teaches through case-based learning, where small groups work through a case study or scenario together. It publishes no unit list, so the unit names, the year each system falls in, and the article mapping are our own grouping. Always check your official course materials. Last updated October 2026.
