How Greater Manchester assesses Phase 1

  • Written exams come at the end of each year, in short answer question (SAQ) and single best answer (SBA) formats. Year 1 is all written; Year 2 adds practical exams.
  • OSCEs test clinical and communication skills, and you keep an e-portfolio (an online record of your skills and reflections). A formal clinical examination comes at the end of Phase 1.
  • Exams are held at the end of each year, so the semesters on this page are only a way of grouping the units, in Leicester's order.
  • Greater Manchester publishes the official dates and formats. Always check your own course materials.

This is an independent revision guide written by SimpleMed. It is not endorsed by, or affiliated with, the University of Greater Manchester or the University of Leicester. Greater Manchester has not published its own unit list, so unit names follow Leicester's published Phase 1 and the article mapping is our own. Some articles sit under more than one unit, so the unit counts add up to more than the 356 different articles on this page. Last updated October 2026.
