How Exeter assesses Years 1 and 2
- Exeter assesses three themes: Medical Knowledge, Clinical Practice and Research and Scholarship. Each year is one 120-credit module (MDC1001 and MDC2001).
- The Applied Medical Knowledge (AMK) test is a multiple-choice progress test. Exeter says its students sit it four times a year. The 2026 to 27 timetable lists two AMK dates in each of Years 1 and 2: March and May in Year 1, December and March in Year 2. Year 1 also has a mid-year test (Term 2) and an end-of-year test (Term 3).
- Year 2 has two Medical Knowledge assessments, labelled MK1 and MK2 on the timetable: MK1 in January and MK2 in June. OSCEs run through both years. Research and Scholarship runs alongside them: in Years 1 and 2 Exeter says the focus is on academic and evidence appraisal skills (judging how good the evidence for a claim is), with exposure to research in the Medical School.
- Exeter publishes the official dates and formats. Always check your own course materials.
