How Cambridge assesses Part IA and IB
- The main exam sitting for the Medical Sciences Tripos Part IA and IB is in June. Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice and the Social and Ethical Context of Health and Illness are assessed earlier, by the end of the Lent term (the second term). Most papers count towards both the Tripos and the Second MB. The essay papers count towards the Tripos only.
- Five courses each have three parts: a paper on lecture material, a paper on practical material and an essay paper. They are Homeostasis, Molecules in Medical Science, Biology of Disease, Mechanisms of Drug Action and Human Reproduction. Functional Architecture of the Body and Neurobiology and Human Behaviour have a short answer paper and an essay paper. Head and Neck Anatomy has one short answer paper. Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice (one 45-minute multiple-choice paper), the Social and Ethical Context of Health and Illness (coursework) and Preparing for Patients (coursework) count towards the Second MB only.
- Histology is examined inside the Homeostasis papers. The Preparing for Patients placements must also be completed for the Second MB.
- Cambridge publishes the official dates and formats. Always check your own course materials.
