How ARU assesses Phases 1 and 2

  • ARU assesses with exams at the end of each year and a portfolio built through the course. Exams are single best answer (SBA) papers, OSCEs and anatomy spot exams.
  • Before graduating you sit the national Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA, a two-part test of the knowledge and skills needed to practise in the UK) and a Prescribing Safety Assessment.
  • ARU does not publish block timetables or exam names. Blocks follow the order of its course pages, the exam labels are ours, and Year 3 is included because its system blocks belong to Phase 2.
  • Your own course materials give the official dates and formats, so always check them there.

Getting ready for clinical

Phase 3 is the clinical phase. It starts with induction (an introduction to clinical work), then moves through rotations (spells of placement in different specialties) and blocks. It ends with a foundation assistantship (a final placement that prepares you to work as a junior doctor).

This is an independent revision guide written by SimpleMed. It is not endorsed by, or affiliated with, ARU School of Medicine or Anglia Ruskin University. Block names follow ARU's published curriculum pages. ARU lists no topics for these blocks, so the topics in each block, including the Principles Block, are SimpleMed's own grouping. Many articles sit under more than one block, so the block counts add up to more than the 356 in the header, which counts each article once. Always check your official course materials.
