How Aberdeen assesses its systems years

  • Foundations of Medicine has a 100-question single best answer (SBA) paper in December. The December paper is an exempting exam: if you pass it, you do not need to sit the Degree Exam in May. Medicine 1 has a 100-question SBA paper in 120 minutes.
  • Anatomy has a 40-station objective structured practical examination (OSPE, a spot test) in Year 1, then two OSPEs of 40 questions each in Year 2, in December and June. Clinical Skills is an OSCE: six stations in May of Year 1, a further OSCE in Year 2 and a nine-station OSCE in April of Year 3.
  • Medicine 2 has two SBA papers of 2 hours each: Paper 1 in December and Paper 2 in June. Aberdeen calls its exams "degree exams".
  • Aberdeen publishes the official dates and formats. Always check your own course materials.

Getting ready for clinical

Years 4 and 5 are clinical, on placements in hospitals and general practice, with the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) in Year 4 and the final clinical examination in Year 5. The AKT is the knowledge part of the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), which tests the core knowledge, skills and behaviours of doctors who want to practise in the UK.

This is an independent revision guide written by SimpleMed. It is not endorsed by, or affiliated with, the University of Aberdeen or its School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. Course and system names follow Aberdeen's published catalogue and course page; the article mapping is our own. Year 3 is included because systems teaching continues into it. Always check your official course materials. Last updated October 2026.
